Return to College

Forum for Moms and Working Adults Going Back to College

Hi, People,
I'm glad someone helped me to find you, guys, here now.
I am a full time mom, with a full time job, going to college, taking classes at night.
As an immigrant, my original degree is worthless here, so I'm doing it all over again.
Whe you have a goal, it helps you keep focused, when a child is sick and you need to miss a class, when you did not find time to study, or when you can't find a good, available soul to watch your blessings for you.
It's a challenge, and is a whole new school system to me, so, support and tips on how to navigate school life are welcome.

Hi Karla! That would be huge challenge. I think all colleges should have daycares available for their students.

And I can't imagine how awful it would be to have to redo my credits like you have to. The only good thing about that is you will know so much, maybe it will be easier to get good grades. Plus you will know the material SO well when you are done (doubly well...)

I will be happy to help with any tips too. I went back to school recently to take my education classes to teach high school.

Hi, Betsy,

Congratulations for graduating! You made it! Yipieee!!
Now is my turn, credit by credit. But there is no looking back, now.
What do you think of the career of school counselor? I'm curious about it.
For now, I'm thinking in getting a BS (do not like the sound of it, but... that's how is called!), then work from there.

I think being a school counselor MIGHT be less stressful than being a classroom teacher. But a lot depends on the school you are assigned to or accept a position in. Be very careful to research your school before you get a job there.

School counselors are so needed in the school systems. There are still students who are not properly diagnosed. Plus, some parents are afraid of helping their kids because of the stigma they feel about mental problems. I don't know of a currently practicing school counselor, or I would give you his or her email address.

The school counselors I met seemed to be too busy to read all their emails or research reported problems. I don't know if this is the norm for all schools. I hope not for your sake.

If you can possibly get a job in a private school, I would try for that first.

Karla,

Most principals will not even look at a school counselor that doesn't have classroom experience as a teacher. If you are interested in becoming a school counselor, I'd recommend that you try to set up some informational interviews at your local school with a principal as well as a counselor. That way, you can ask the principal what he/she would look for in a candidate for a counseling job, as well as ask the counselor about their own job duties.

Good luck to you! How unfortunate that your credits will not transfer. I'm sure that your prior experience with post-secondary education will be of great help to you, though. Please let me know if I can help with anything.

Tony,
My classes re-star next Monday, with algebra! So I know what you are talking about. I will need help too, and a lot of homework to keep up with the class, but is worth it, Tony. Don't be discouraged.
Sometimes, though, I do feel like pulling my hair...

Hi, Tony. Let us know how it goes. I also had trouble with math in school. I had to take a remedial math class. It was a really good class, though. The teacher was really good. I finally got some math concepts that I had not been able to understand before. Maybe this will happen with your tutor. I hope so!

So anyhow, I know how it feels to take a really hard subject. I wish you lots of luck, and hope it goes really well for you.

Hi Tony,

Math is really tough for a lot of people. It seems people usually have either a talent for reading/writing or math, but having both talents is unusual. I really struggled with math in high school, but when I went back to college in my 30's, math seemed to come a lot easier for me. I think by this point, I wasn't as afraid to look stupid if I didn't understand a concept. That's great that your instructor is willing to work with you. instructors are very good about this if they can see that you are putting in the work necessary to succeed. I think a lot of math is just practice, practice, practice. It's like learning a new language--you don't become instantly fluent. You have to spend a lot of time at it, and the same is true of math.

Good luck to both you and Karla in the upcoming semester.
