I don't undertand what you say "I shifted quite drastically towards socialism as my political perspective". Are you saying Socialism works? Is your phylosophy aligned with K. Marx or V. Lenin or something totally different...
Actually, it's not likely that I'll be returning to college as I already have 2 masters degrees. But I do work as a librarian in a university and so might be able to provide a useful point of view in some discussions here.
